U.S. Plans Shift To Elite Units As It Winds Down In Afghanistan

The United States’ plan to wind down its combat role in Afghanistan a year earlier than expected relies on shifting responsibility to Special Operations forces that hunt insurgent leaders and train local troops, according to senior Pentagon officials and military officers. These forces could remain in the country well after the NATO mission ends in late 2014.

If past is prologue, the December 5 Bonn conference, which aims to shore up international support for Afghanistan, will conclude with promises that will almost certainly remain unfulfilled, like the Kabul and London conferences before it, and the barely noticed Istanbul conference last month.

Marine General: Afghans Will Take Lead

As the U.S. begins to withdraw about a third of its forces in Afghanistan over the next year, American commanders are positioning Afghan troops to take the lead and protect security gains in hard-fought former insurgent strongholds, according to the Camp Pendleton Marine scheduled to take command next spring in the southwest.

The Lord’s Resistance Army

President Obama announced on October 14 that he was sending approximately 100 military advisers to central Africa to assist in efforts to neutralize one of the continent’s most notorious rebel groups, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA). Their main task will be to help the militaries of Uganda, South Sudan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and the Central African Republic (CAR) devise operations to kill or capture the LRA leadership and protect vulnerable citizens in the region. Although the advisers will be armed, they will not participate in combat operations.

Invading Iran: Lessons from Iraq
